Peace Building & Security

PSI supports communities affected by violent conflicts achieve a lasting peace by focusing on addressing the underlying causes of conflict and help people resolve their differences peacefully and lay the foundations to prevent future violence.
Conflict is inevitable as nomadic pastoralists frequently traverse with their animals, encountering challenges such as limited resources, shifting climatic conditions and restrictions on entering grazing lands. These challenges are the common drivers of conflict between clans and sub-clans within the pastoralist setup in our region.
Pastoralists do not have easy access to or influence over political and policy deliberations, PSI works with various community groups, leaders, traditional peacemakers and governmental agencies through collective lobbying to increase communities’ agency in policymaking about local peace and security.
PSI captures lessons learned to institutionalize broader peacebuilding and conflict resolution mechanism.
Governance Structure

Countering Violent Extremism is another area of our focus under this pillar. We often push our youth towards violence due to our preconceived notion about who they are. Local elites, policymakers, adults, and government agencies often look our youth either as helpless victims or as a problem waiting to happen. In either of these simplistic representations, we strip young people of their humanity and complexity, and we too often implement misguided policies and programs thus paving way for interaction with the insecurities that result from violent extremism.

Extremist violence thrives in simplistic representation combined with challenges of youth unemployment, poverty inequality and ignorance about young peoples’ lives and about their voices and aspirations, as well lack of understanding about how rigid gendered norms shape their identities.
